A. J. "Al" Zale
A. J. "Al" Zale, age 87, 85 Avon Avenue, Bloomsburg, died at 7:20 p. m. Saturday, December 1, 2012 at the Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, where he was a patient for two days. Previously he was a patient at Emmanuel Nursing Center at Maria Joseph, Danville for two years.
Born in Mt. Carmel on March 21, 1925, he was a son of the late John and Catherine (Grinkevich) Zelinski. He was a 1942 graduate of Mt. Carmel High School and resided in Bloomsburg for 55 years.
AJ served with the Pennsylvania State Police for 29 years, retiring with the rank of lieutenant in 1975. During his career he served in Milesburg, Towanda, Hazleton and Bloomsburg. He was employed by Columbia County in the Domestic Relations office for several years and last was the chief deputy sheriff under the late sheriff, Victor Vandling.
He was a member of St. Columba Catholic Church, Bloomsburg.
AJ was an avid Penn State football fan and officiated at high school football games for many years.
He served with the US Army during World War II, participating in campaigns in France, Rhineland, Central Europe and Ardennes. He was wounded in the Battle of the Bulge and received the purple heart. He also received the good conduct medal with four bronze stars
Surviving are his wife, the former Bernadine M. Koons, with whom he celebrated his 55th wedding anniversary on May 1, 2012, two sons: Stephen G. Zale, and his wife Nancy, Nazareth and Kenneth J. Zale, Orlando, Fla.; two granddaughters: Sarah and Alyssa Zale, Nazareth; three sisters: Ramona Novack, Mt. Carmel; Regina, wife of John Oszko, Kulpmont Mildred Kashmere, Forestville, Md. and several nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday at 10 a.m. in St. Columba Catholic Church, 342 Iron St., Bloomsburg, with Msgr. Robert E. Lawrence officiating. Interment with State Police honors in Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery, Mt. Carmel Township, Northumberland County.
The family will receive friends at the Church on Wednesday from 9 - 10 a. m.
