Bernadine M. (Koons) Zale, 98, of Avon Avenue, Bloomsburg died early Monday, Dec. 16, 2024, at the Maria Joseph Manor in Danville.
Born in Mt. Carmel on Dec. 13,1926, she was the only child of the late Thomas and Mayme (Boguszewski) Koons. She was a 1944 graduate of Mt. Carmel Area High School and a 1948 graduate of Susquehanna University in Selinsgrove.
Bernadine was employed as a medical technologist and later became the head of the hematology department at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville early in her life.
She was a member of St. Columba Catholic Church where she was a member of the Legion of Mary. She was a member of the Bloomsburg Hospital Auxiliary for 36 years and served as a judge of elections in Montour Township for many years.
Bernie was an animal lover, an avid baker, enjoyed canning and gardening and was an avid reader. She also enjoyed Notre Dame football.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, A. J. Zale on December 1, 2012, and by a son Thomas Zale in 1962.
Bernie is survived by two sons: Stephen G. Zale and his wife Nancy of Nazareth and Kenneth J. Zale and his partner Candice Current of Orlando, Florida; two granddaughters: Sarah Zale and her husband Chance Hyndshaw of Collegeville and Alyssa Zale of Nazareth and a sister-in-law, Mildred Kashmere of Alexandria, Virginia.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in St. Columba Catholic Church, 342 Iron St., Bloomsburg, on Friday December 20, 2024 at 11 a.m. The Rev. Fr. Frances Tamburro will officiate. Interment will follow in Holy Cross Cemetery, Mt. Carmel. The family will receive friends at the church from 10-11 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Animal Resource Center, P.O. Box 439, Bloomsburg, PA 17815.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of the Dean W. Kriner Inc. Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 325 Market St., Bloomsburg.
