BERNICE L. JOHNSON

Bernice L. Johnson, age 95, formerly of 50 First St., Danville, died at 7:50 a. m. Saturday, July 3, 2010 at the Emmanuel Center For Nursing At Maria Joseph Manor, Danville, where she was a guest since March 10, 2010. She was in failing health for several years.

Born in Berwick on October 3, 1914, she was a daughter of the late Wilson and Mary E. (Doty) Karchner. Her family moved to Danville when she was six years old and she attended the Danville Schools, graduating with the class of 1933.

She was employed as a supervisor in the medical records department of Geisinger Medical Center for many years, retiring in 1975. Following retirement, she and her husband moved to New Smyrna Beach, Florida, residing there until returning to Danville in 1991. She resided in Cooper Township before moving to Florida.

Bernice was a member of St. James United Church of Christ, Ridgeville; a life member of the Eastern Star, Florida and the Shrinettes, also of Florida.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Oscar Johnson, Sr., on August 30, 1999; by a son, Oscar J. Johnson, Jr., on January 3, 2006; by four brothers: Orval Karchner, Ira Karchner, Roland Karchner, Wilson Karchner, Jr.; and by a sister, Beatrice Hull.

Surviving are a son, David A. Johnson, and his wife Bonnie, Marlborough,Conn.; a daughter-in-law, Elizabeth Johnson, Danville; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren, a sister-in-law, Beryl Karchner, Parkville, Md., numerous nieces and nephews, friends and former co-workers.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 2 p. m. in the Roat-Kriner Funeral Home, 1715 Bloom Road, Danville, with the Rev. Mary Schmotzer, pastor of Shiloh United Church of Christ, Danville, officiating. Interment in Odd Fellows Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home, Wednesday 1-2 p. m.

The family will provide flowers. Memorials may be sent to St. James United Church of Christ, 2507 Bloom Road, Danville, PA 17821.
