Bruce Musser of Bloomsburg passed away peacefully on Monday, November 25, 2024.
Bruce was such fun, a genuine, memorable individual––a true character. He was born on March 27, 1953 and grew up on a farm in Jerseytown with his parents, Elmer and Betty, and beloved sister, Miriam. From the time he was young, Bruce always loved music. He taught himself piano and guitar, played trumpet in the Millville High School band, and spoke of nights listening to the radio beaming in from across the country, exposing him to new worlds of sound. He met his future wife and partner in life Kathy singing in the choir at Bloomsburg University. They married at twenty-one and lived together, in their joy-filled Bloomsburg home, until her passing last year.
Bruce was a valued member of the Bloomsburg community. He was a deejay at WHLM, opened Record Revue on Main Street, and sold shirts at the Bloomsburg Fair. He shifted into real estate in 1988, founding The Real Estate Journal in his home office and later co-launching the local RE/MAX branch. Bruce exemplified authenticity, humility, and generosity in his work, while building a vast network of friendships through decades-long commitments with the Kiwanis Club, Rotary, YMCA, local school districts, the town park, and more. His humor was always present with a joke for any occasion. Every Fair week he’d ask, “Did you hear about the dog that was thrown off the ferriswheel? It didn’t have any mustard on it.”
Bruce’s great loves included Kathy, his kids, Shelby and Jordan, their home in Bloomsburg, and traveling the world. “Be a sponge and soak it up,” he’d say, whether venturing far to places like India and Japan or closer to New Orleans for jazz, Las Vegas for his favorite magician, or New York City, “the greatest city in the world.” He loved meeting new people and making friends, hearing their stories, sharing his, and continuously learning and growing. His passion for great food––he’d try anything––live musical theatre and opera, and time with his kids brought him to New York regularly. They loved him so much, both as an endlessly devoted dad and as a friend.
Bruce’s spirit and zest for life was contagious, inspiring all who knew him and his kids, especially, to seek new experiences and to push themselves to pursue their passions. He’ll be remembered as singular, charismatic, principled, restless, selfless, welcoming, humble, curious, wise, goofy, tolerant, dedicated, and a role model. Bruce told us all to “do your best, tell the truth, and keep your promises.” Let’s all strive to do just that. “Onward and Upward!”
A Celebration of Life will be held at Turkey Hill Brewing Company, 991 Central Road, Bloomsburg, PA 17815 on Sunday, December 8. A casual open house will be from 2:00–5:00 PM with a remembrance at 3:00 PM.
Memorials in Bruce’s name may be sent to the BAY 2nd Grade Learn to Swim program, Bloomsburg YMCA, 30 East 7th Street, Bloomsburg, PA 17815.
