Capt. Mark M. Golden, U. S. N., Ret. age 86, of Oak Street, Bloomsburg died on Sunday, June 11, 2023 at the Geisinger Medical Center in Danville where he was a patient.
Born on June 1, 1937 in Evanston, Illinois, he was a son of the late Col. William C. Golden, U. S. A., Ret. and Sarah (Leibermann) Golden.
He was a 1955 graduate of the Valley Forge Military Academy and a 1960 graduate of the U. S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. He was an Olmsted Scholar at the University of Madrid, Spain, from 1968-1970
Mark proudly served his country by serving with the U. S. Navy for 24 years, 1960 to 1984. He served as the Captain of the U. S. S. Tecumseh, a submarine. While in the Navy he made 14 deterrent patrols. Following his military service, he was employed by P. P. & L. for 18 years.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Bloomsburg where he served in various capacities including Elder. He also was active with the Bloomsburg Theatre Ensemble where he served on the board of directors as well as enjoying the performances.
Mark was a volunteer Blue and Gold officer at the U. S. Naval Academy. He also served on the Board of Valley Forge Military Academy. His hobbies were photography and astronomy. He loved to travel, taking 62 cruises and visiting over 80 countries.
Surviving is his wife, the former Jeanie Barringer, with whom he observed their 40th wedding anniversary on January 2, 2023; two sons, Steven D. Golden and his wife Emiko Nakamura of Singapore, Michael C. Golden and his wife Feng Xaio Ping of Shanghai, China; a step-son Brian K. Loucks and his wife April of Cherry Valley, New York; a step-daughter, Deborah L., wife of Richard Moon of Cherry Valley, New York; seven grandchildren: Olivia Golden, Lindsey Jenkins, Shaun Jalbert, Dana Jalbert, Kelsey Wellington, Rebecca Loucks, and Brandon Loucks; five step-grandchildren: Austin Font, Tacoma Morris, Dalton Morris, Jessica Deweese and James Moon; seven great grandchildren: Jayden, Adelyn, Bryce, Finnegan, Freyja, Arwyn and Ava; and a sister, Barbara Parker, Lexington, Virginia.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 24, 2023 at 1 p. m. in the First Presbyterian Church, 345 Market Street, Bloomsburg, with Rev. Steven Cureton, former pastor of the Church officiating. Military Honors will be accorded by the U.S. Navy and the combined American Legion/VFW Honor Guard.
