Caroline Sloane Millar, Summit, NJ, age 86, passed away at the home of her son in Danville, PA on Wednesday, October 7, 2015 after a four month illness.
Born in the Bronx, NY on December 19, 1928, she was the daughter of the late Howard F. and Albina (Hlavaty) Sloane. Caroline resided in the New Providence and Summit, NJ areas, as well as Southampton, NY for many years.
Caroline was the great-granddaughter of James Sloane, brother of William and John Sloane of W. & J. Sloane, Interior Decorators and Home Furnishers, Fifth Avenue, NY. In the aftermath of WWII, she met her husband Bill while working at a Womrath Book shop in NYC at the time he was attending NYU School of Engineering on the GI bill. She was a gourmet cook, skilled bridge player, talented gardener and avid reader of the New York Times. She was a 12th generation Mayflower descendant (from the Elder William Brewster), and Thanksgiving was a special time for the entire family. Her passion was spending time by the ocean in Southampton with family and friends.
She was an active member of the National and NJ Mayflower Societies, and the Senior Citizens and Bridge Clubs in New Providence, NJ.
Surviving is her husband, William M. Millar, with whom she celebrated 63 years of marriage on December 23, 2014; her son, William Sloane Millar, MD, FACR, Danville, PA; her daughter, Suzanne M., wife of Gaius Mount, Stockton, NJ; her granddaughter, Alyssa Mount; and her grandson, Bradley Mount.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, November 7, 2015 in the Presbyterian Church at New Providence, 1307 Springfield Avenue, New Providence, NJ with Rev. Colleen Fletcher officiating. Reception to follow. All who knew Caroline are invited to attend.
