Charles R. Hartzell, Sr., age 77, Watsontown and formerly of Bloomsburg, passed peacefully to be with his Heavenly Father on Thursday, December 21, 2023, at his home surrounded by loved ones.
Born in Bloomsburg on November 6, 1946, he was a son of the late Earl and Hazel (Hess) Hartzel. Following graduation from Central Columbia Joint High School in 1965, he volunteered to join the U. S. Marine Corps where he earned several awards, including National Defense Medal, Vietnamese Service Medal with 2*, Vietnamese Campaign Medal with two/devises, two Good Conduct medals and the Presidential Unit Citation. He was discharged in April 1971 with the rank of Sergeant.
Charles founded Hartzell Disposal Service, now operated by his son, Charles (Punk) Hartzell, Jr. He also created and operated several other businesses, raised chickens, a bait and tackle shop, trailer court, scrap business, home building and renovations.
In 1986 he left Pennsylvania and moved to Ontario, Canada, becoming a dual citizen. He returned to Pennsylvania in 1997.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, John (Jack) Hartzel and James Hartzel.
Surviving is his wife, the former Lucie Galipeau, with whom he observed their 34th wedding anniversary on April 7, 2023. He was deeply loved by sons Christopher Hartzell of Port Matilda and Andrew Hartzell at home; Charles R. (Punk) Hartzell, Jr and his partner, Pat Leiby of Bloomsburg; daughters, Michelle Hartzell and her wife Colleen Cauto and Rebecca, wife of David Masker, all of Bloomsburg; a step-daughter, Jessica Logan and a step-son, Lucas Logan and his wife Ana, all of Canada; ten grandchildren: Bailey, Mackenzie, Vivian, Conrad, Mason, Isabella, Jayden, Josh, Victoria and Hazel. Also surviving is a brother, Marvin Hartzell and his wife Linda of Millville.
Charles loved his English Bulldog Bonnie, fishing, traveling in his motorhome, history, home improvements, telling jokes, the word persevere, visiting friends and family.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, May 13, 2024 at 11 a.m. at the Shiloh Bible Church, 123 Church St., Bloomsburg, with Rev. Dr. Douglas Lyon, officating. Interment and military honors will follow in Elan Memorial Park, Lime Ridge. Visitation will be held at the church from 10-11 a.m. prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in his name to Recovery Church, c/o CWC, 363 Stamm Road, Milton, PA 17847.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of the Dean W. Kriner, Inc., Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 325 Market Street, Bloomsburg.
