Charles E. Phillips, age 90, 74 Luther Drive, Lewistown, died at 5:52 p. m. Monday, November 21, 2016 at the Geisinger Medical Center, Danville.
Born in Danville on November 2, 1926, he was a son of the late Alonzo C. and Elfrieda I. (Rudy) Phillips.
A 1944 graduate of Danville High School, he went on to graduate from the former Bloomsburg State Teachers College in 1947, following service in World War II. He also did graduate work at Bucknell University; Temple University; Franklin & Marshall College; Western Maryland University and Lehigh University.
Charles was an educator for 29 years, beginning as a teacher at Susquehannock High School, where he taught from 1951 to 1959. In 1959 he became the principal and later the superintendent of the Delaware Valley Regional School District, Frenchtown, New Jersey, retiring in November, 1980.
He was an active member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Lewistown, where he served as a Sunday school teacher for the Ich Dien Class and also served as the superintendent of the adult Sunday school. Earlier in his life he was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Danville. He especially enjoyed the times he spent with his children and grandchildren.
Charles served honorably with the U. S. Navy during World War II from 1944 to 1946. He served on the U.S.S. Wasatch in the South Pacific theatre of operations. Following this service, he enlisted in the Pennsylvania National Guard in 1947. This group was later placed on active duty during the Korean War and he served with them until October, 1951.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, the former Mildred A. Romig, on August 27, 2011; a brother, Walter Phillips; and a sister, Helen Long.
Charles is survived by a daughter, Constance Ann, and her husband Mark Jorgensen, Bimidji, Minnesota; a son, Jeffrey Alan Phillips, and his wife Donna, McClure; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was the last of his immediate family.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 11 a. m. in the Roat-Kriner Funeral Home, 1715 Bloom Road, Danville. Interment in Odd Fellows Cemetery. Viewing Saturday from 10-11 a. m.
The family will provide flowers. Memorials may be sent in his name to St. John’s Lutheran Church 120 N. Main St., Lewistown, Pa 17044.
