Donald R. Carl, age 88, formerly of Franklin Place, Bloomsburg, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Thursday, February 5, 2015 at 11:25 a. m. at the Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, where he was admitted on Wednesday.
Born in Bloomsburg on November 18, 1926, he was a son of the late Russell G. and Dorothy M. (Carl) Carl. He resided in Bloomsburg for much of his lifetime.
Don was the owner of the former Catawissa Hotel for nine years before his son Duke took over and he assisted him for several years. He also was an antique and collectibles dealer. He enjoyed attending yard sales and flea markets usually being there before they opened for the day.
Earlier in his life he was employed by Reithoffer Amusements at fairs and carnivals, and also was a truck driver for Girton Manufacturing, Millville. Don was an avid gardener and was especially good at growing grass. He loved animals of all types and thoroughly enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Don served with the US Navy during World War II in the Pacific Theatre of operations.
He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Reta M. Messinger on June 7, 1987; by a son, Robert J. Winters on May 17, 2007; and by two brothers: Allen Carl and Franklin Carl. Surviving are a son, Duke R. Carl, Bloomsburg; a daughter, Dolly R. Lowe, wife of Michael L. Stauffer, Danville; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Arden Carl, and his wife Lavade, Berwick.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 11 a. m. in the Dean W. Kriner, Inc., Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 325 Market St., Bloomsburg, with Eric J. Miller, lead pastor of the Bloomsburg Christian Church officiating. Interment in Freewill Cemetery, Roaring Creek Township, with military honors by the combined VFW group. Viewing on Monday from 6-8 p. m. and Tuesday from 10 - 11 a. m. at the funeral home.
