Donald H. “Don” Spahn, age 82, of Exton, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2019, at the Emmanuel Center for Nursing in Danville, surrounded by his family.
Born in Oceanside, New York on Aug. 16, 1937, he was the son of the late Frank Spahn and Violet (Bedell) Spahn Cirino. He graduated from Malverne High School, Malverne, NY in 1956. He attended St. John’s University and New York Community College.
In 1964 he married Carol Ann DeLuise of Brooklyn, New York. The couple moved from New York to Pennsylvania where he was a graphic arts manager for Norcross Greeting Card Co. He later entered the insurance industry and worked for Equitable Insurance Co. at the Karr Barth Agency. In retirement he worked for Wolfington Bus Co. of Exton driving a school bus. He really enjoyed interacting with the kids. He also was the proprietor of a Catholic/Christian card and gift shop.
Don was a member of Sts. Philip and James Catholic Church in Exton where he served in many leadership roles, including Parish Council president, head usher, and participated in organizing many parish functions. He later became a member of St. Elizabeth Catholic Church, Chester Springs. He was also active in the Philadelphia Archdiocese Cursillo movement, serving as Rector on Cursillo retreats.
He was elected as a Republican committeeman in 1994. He also was a member of the Exton Rotary Club.
He served with the U. S. Air Force in the 1960’s.
Don was loved by his friends and family. He made friends wherever he went. His faith was very important to him and he was known for his optimistic entrepreneurial spirit. He will be remembered by all who knew him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank Spahn and Violet (Bedell) Spahn Cirino; his step-father, Nicholas Cirino; his wife of 30 years, Carol Ann, in 1994; his sister Sally (Spahn) Seabury and his brother, John “Jack” Cirino.
Don is survived by his daughters: Suzanne C., wife of Peter Erndwein of Gilbertsville and Amy Case of Catawissa; seven grandchildren: Lindsay Erndwein, Cecelia Erndwein, Joseph Case, Carrie Case, Benjamin Case, Nathaniel Case, Mary Teresa Case; two sisters: Diane, wife of John Davis and Lynn, wife of John Miller, all of Catawissa; and a brother, Charles “Chuck” Cirino, and his wife Janice of Virginia.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, November 20, 2019 at 11:00 a. m. in St. Elizabeth Catholic Church, 110 St. Elizabeth Drive, Chester Springs. The family will receive friends at the Church from 9:45 to 10:45 a. m. Interment will immediately follow in St. Agnes Cemetery, West Chester.
