Doris E. DiVirgilio, age 86, 808 1/2 Old Berwick Road, Bloomsburg, went to be with her Lord on Friday, March 18, 2011 at 11 a.m. at the Columbia Montour Hospice at Maria Hall, Danville, where she was a guest for one week. She had been in failing health for two years.
Born in Philadelphia on November 30, 1924, she was a daughter of the late Frederick and Elsie C. (Livezey) Woerner. She resided in Bloomsburg for 32 years and previously lived in Stroudsburg and Bucks County where she owned and operated the Ko-Z-Nook Hoagie Shop. She worked briefly as a realtor after moving to Bloomsburg.
Doris was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Bloomsburg for 32 years.
She loved spending time with her large and extended family, crocheting, sewing, bird watching, flowers, doing word puzzles and playing board games.
A pillar of strength to her family and an inspiration to all who knew her, she loved to tell stories of living on a farm as a child during the great depression and helping to hold down the home front during World War II by working in a garage while the men were off defending our country.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 42 years, Dominic C. DiVirgilio on May 6, 1989; and by two sisters: Mildred Giampaolo and Wilma Stone.
Surviving are four daughters: Jacqueline Silkowski, Gail DiVirgilio, Evelyn Rankin and Michelle DiVirgilio, all of Bloomsburg; a step-daughter, Joan Ermel, Strattford, N.J.; a step-son, Michael DiVirgilio, and his wife Maureen, Phila.; five grandchildren: Amy Bacon, Jason DiVirgilio, Dominic Rankin, Anthony DiVirgilio and Adam Long; eight great grandchildren; one great-great grandson; a sister, Erma Wisniewski, Phila.; two brothers: Frederick Woerner, and his wife Ella, Neelyton; Robert Woerner, and his wife Elsie, Gilbert; and a sister-in-law, Lena DiVirgilio, Phila.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 11 a.m. in the Fletcher-Nasevich Funeral Home, 9529 Bustleton Ave., Philadelphia, with the Rev. Ralph D. Sigler, Jr., her former pastor, officiating. Interment in William Penn Cemetery, Philadelphia. Friends may call at the Fletcher-Nasevich Funeral Home Tuesday from 9-11 a.m.
Memorial services will be held in St. Matthew Lutheran Church, 123 N. Market St., Bloomsburg, on Thursday, March 24, 2011 at 2 p.m. with her pastor, Rev. Joel L. Zeiders, officiating.
