Dorothy (May) Girton

Dorothy (May) Girton, age 86, East Fifth St., Bloomsburg, died at her home on Sunday, Jan. 23, 2011 at 5:41 p.m. She was seriously ill for two months.

Born in Bloomsburg on June 12, 1924, she was a daughter of the late Eugene and Agnes (Dowd) May. She was a 1942 graduate of Bloomsburg High School. She resided in Troy and Pottstown from 1948 to 2001 when she returned to Bloomsburg.

She was a member of St. Columba Catholic Church, Bloomsburg, where she was a member of the Voyager Club. While living in Troy, she was a member of Holy Child Catholic Church, Mansfield, where she was very active in church activities.

Dorothy was a volunteer at Maria Joseph Manor, Danville and also for the American Red Cross, participating in blood drives. She was a former member of the Troy Hospital Auxiliary and also belonged to the Log Cabin Quilters, Troy.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, James L. Girton, on Dec. 13, 1990 and by a daughter, Leslie Anne Long in April 1981.

Surviving are seven children: Carol L. Reed, Wareham, Mass.; Dorothy J. Girton, Bloomsburg; J. Michael Girton, and his wife Nancy M., Christmas, Fla.; Patricia C., wife of Kevin C. Stober, Barto; Mary T., wife of Walter M. L. Hampton, Fleetwood; Kathleen M., wife of James O. Moyer, Jr., Mohrsville; Jennifer G., wife of Robert T. Stuart, Jr.; Birdsboro; ten grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; two sisters: Mary Louise Trump, Lancaster and Betty, wife of Frank Buck, Windham, New Hampshire; and a brother, William E. May, and his wife Sarah, Bloomsburg.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday at 10:30 a.m. in St. Columba Catholic Church, 342 Iron St., Bloomsburg, by Rev. Joseph H. Fennessy. There will be no viewing.

Interment will be on Saturday at 11 a.m. in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, Blossburg, Tioga County, with the Rev. Jacek Bialkowski of Holy Child Catholic Church officiating.
