Elizabeth Laura Christian, age 58, of 23 Westover Road, Benton, passed away peacefully at 5:00 a.m. Friday , October 3, 2014 at the Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, after a heroic six month battle with pancreatic cancer. She was surrounded by her loving family. She was born on August 10, 1956 in Glenolden, the daughter of E. Jayne (Davis) McCann, Benton and the late Albert J. McCann, Sr.
Growing up, she was an active member of First Presbyterian Church of Glenolden, where she sang in the choir. She was a 1974 graduate of Interboro High School, Philadelphia, where she served as captain of the school rifle team.
Laura was an avid reader who enjoyed all things literary. She incorporated reading into every part of her life from time spent being a librarian at the Thomas Beaver Free Library, Danville, to teaching at an adult literacy program. She firmly believed that reading can both educate and send the audience on wonderful journeys. She not only traveled through the written word, but experienced it firsthand.
She was a lover of culture and travel, studying abroad at the University of Madrid as a part of her undergraduate studies. There she not only learned Spanish and Russian but developed her passion for good food, fine wine, and great conversation. Her love for Spanish flair grew more when she and her husband Dean spent four years in Las Cruces, New Mexico while Dean finished his medical program. Las Cruces holds a special place in their hearts; where her pride and joy, son Sean, was born. Her adventurous ambition continues in him. One of her most memorable trips was their touring of the British Isles after Sean completed his semester abroad.
Her hobbies included cross stitch, crafts, playing cards and daily cross word puzzles with her mom.
Laura was a beloved mother, wife, daughter, sister, aunt and friend. She is survived by her dear husband of 31 years , Dean A. Christian, M.D. a son, Sean R., age 24 of Philadelphia; mother E. Jayne (Davis) McCann, Benton; brothers'; Albert J. McCann, Jr. and Jenny (Morgan) McCann, Glenolden; Ian T. McCann and LoriAnne (Alexander) McCann, Prospect Park and a sister Dorothy (McCann}, wife of Michael Martino, Blackwood, New Jersey. Also, surviving are her brother in law Paul and Debbie Christian, Flemington, New Jersey; and sister in law, Karen and Bruce Hughes, Columbus, Ohio. Laura was a favorite aunt among her fourteen nieces and nephews. Also, Laura would always open her arms to her precious feline friends who found a loving home in the Christian household.
She was greeted in heaven by her father, Albert J. McCann, Sr., whom she adored very much.
