Elizabeth H. "Betty" Musser

Devoted wife, mother, and avid reader

Elizabeth H. “Betty” Musser, age 98, of Bloomsburg, peacefully passed away Thursday, September 7, 2023 at Brookdale Senior Living Center. Brookdale Senior Living Center provided exceptional and loving care for her during the last seven years.

She was born on February 16, 1925 in Philadelphia. As her mother died just ten days after her birth, she was lovingly raised by her aunt and uncle, Harold and Viola Colbeck, both deceased.

Betty had beautiful red hair. She was a child of the Depression and that influenced her entire lifetime. She grew to be self-sufficient, frugal, and learned homemaking skills at an early age.

After high school she immediately continued her education graduation from the University of Pennsylvania, School of Occupational Therapy in June 1946. Her university days were during World War II and the students were encouraged to roll bandages for the Red Cross and knit helmet liners while attending classes. Betty experienced the shock of Pearl Harbor and sending her loved ones off to the war.

Betty met and married the farm manager at the hospital, Elmer C. Musser, on May 22, 1948. Together they moved to Bucks County and then to Columbia County, where they had a large dairy farm. Upon retirement they moved to Bloomsburg and resided there until Elmer’s death in September 2003. Betty and Elmer shared 55 years of marriage.

Betty worked as an occupational therapist, being possibly the first registered O.T. to work for Columbia Montour Home Health. She was an active member of the Wesley United Methodist Church for 62 years. She served on the board of the Columbia Montour Planning Commission and worked for the Arthritis Association. She was a member of the Ivy Club. During her younger years, Betty volunteered for the Bloomsburg Hospital Ladies Auxiliary and worked with Elmer at the Bloomsburg Food Cupboard.

She was an avid reader and loved music, art, and world travel. She was an excellent seamstress and knitter.

Betty is survived by two children, Miriam (Don) Eyer, and Bruce R. Musser; five grandchildren: Seth, Susannah, and Will Eyer, and Shelby and Jordan Musser; six great-grandchildren: Kellsey, Lindsey, Alexis, Melanie, Ashton, and Nolton Eyer.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer; daughter-in-law, Kathy Musser; cousin, Harold Colbeck; seventeen brother and sister-in-laws, and infant great-granddaughter, Sara Eyer.
