Elwood P. âBuckâ Hunsinger
Elwood P. âBuckâ Hunsinger, age 89, formerly of Drinker Street, Bloomsburg (Fernville) died at 8:10 a. m. Thursday, July 11, 2013 at Emeritus At Bloomsburg, an assisted living facility in Scott Township where he resided for the past four years.
Born on May 11, 1924 in Mifflin Township, he was a son of the late Orville and Pauline (Stoker) Hunsinger. He resided in Fernville for 60 years prior to entering Emeritus.
Buck was employed by the former Magee Carpet Co. for over 30 years working in the sheet metal department or as he called it the âtin shopâ. Following retirement he assisted Olen Knecht Auctioneers at public sales for a number of years.
He was a longtime member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church; Elks Lodge 436; Columbia Valley Moose Lodge 623; and the Valley of Bloomsburg Post 273, American Legion. A longtime member of the former Winona Fire Co. and the Fernville Fire Co., he was a life member of the Buckhorn Community Fire Co.
Buck served with the U. S. Navy during World War II in the Pacific Theatre.
He was and avid bowler and softball player in his earlier years. He also served as a leader for Boy Scout Troop 26, which was sponsored by the Magee Carpet Co. Buck loved the Bloomsburg Fair and looked forward to working there each year as a ticket taker at the Main Street gate for many years.
Buck was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, the former Margaret L. âMargieâ Carr, on Sept. 13, 2007; by a step brother, Wilmer Stoker; and two step sisters: May June Harris and Hazel Kitchen.
Surviving are a daughter, Cheryl, wife of Leslie Knecht, Palmyra; a son, Dennis Hunsinger, and his wife Nora, Jefferson Hills; five grandchildren: Kristina Patterson, and her husband Ryan; Melissa, wife of Christopher Vitolano; Colleen, wife of William Nicholas; Angela, wife of John Yohey; Stephanie, wife of Kerry Broadt; nine great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mabel Force, Mifflinville. There are also a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 11 a. m. in the Dean W. Kriner, Inc., Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 325 Market Street, Bloomsburg with his pastor, Rev. Dr. Joel L. Zeiders officiating. Private interment will be made at the convenience of the family in Mifflinville Cemetery with full military honors by the combined VFW group.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday from 10 - 11 a. m.
