ESTHER D. SANDEL
Esther D. Sandel, age 94, formerly of Dutch Hill Road, Bloomsburg, died at 11:45 p. m. Friday, July 30, 2010 at the Emmanuel Center For Nursing, Danville, where she was a patient since April, 2008. She previously resided at Maria Joseph Manor, Danville, for six years.
Born on December 25, 1915 in Hemlock Township, she was a daughter of the late Clarence and Hazel (Brobst) Derr. She resided in Madison Township from 1955 until 2002.
Esther was a 1933 graduate of Bloomsburg High School. She attended the former Bloomsburg Hospital School of Nursing and also the former Danville School District Practical Nursing School. In addition to assisting on the family farm, she was employed as a nurses aide at the Bloomsburg Hospital for 2 1/2 years and as a cashier at the Buckhorn Truck Stop for 3 1/2 years.
She was a longtime member of the Emmanuel Dutch Hill Bible Church where she served as organist from 1980 to 1998, as a pianist from 1930 to 1998 and as a Sunday School teacher for 60 years.
Esther was secretary of the Dutch Hill Cemetery board for 21 years and was a former vice-president of the Frosty Valley Old Timers group. She was a former member of the Columbia Montour Chapter, AARP.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John A. "Jack" Sandel, after 63 years of marriage, on February 8, 2004; by a son, Eugene R. Sandel on December 21, 1969; by a brother, LeRoy C. Derr in 1988; and by a sister, Ethel M. Correll on August 20, 2006.
Surviving are two sons: John E. Sandel, Catawissa; Jerry C. Sandel, and his wife Joellyn, Bloomsburg; four granddaughters; ten great-grandchildren; a sister, Isabel I., wife of Raymond Shultz, Buckhorn; and two brothers: Paul E. Derr, and his wife Harriet, Bloomsburg and Franklin E. Derr, Danville.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 11 a. m. in the Emmanuel Dutch Hill Bible Church, 592 Dutch Hill Road, Bloomsburg, with her pastor, Rev. George A. Zerbe, officiating. Interment in Dutch Hill Cemetery. Friends may call at the Church on Wednesday from 10-11 a. m.
