Eugene M. “Gene” Hamilton, age 96, formerly of West 12th Street, Bloomsburg, died at 2:05 a. m. Monday, Sept. 30, 2019 at Vintage Knolls Senior Living, Danville.
Born in Mayfield, Lackawanna County, on April 14, 1923, he was a son of the late Michael E. and Blanche (Mecolick) Yurkovsky.
He moved to Bloomsburg as a child and attended Bloomsburg High School through the 10th grade. He then attended and graduated from Valley Forge Military Academy in Wayne in 1941. He attended Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster.
Gene enlisted in the U. S. Marine Corps several days after Pearl Harbor and was a proud veteran of his service from 1941 to 1945 with the 1st Marine Division. He served as a sergeant in the battles of Guadalcanal, Eastern New Guinea and Okinawa. He was a member of the Ft. McClure Post 804, VFW and Valley of Bloomsburg American Legion Post 273.
He was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Bloomsburg.
Gene was a former member of Washington Lodge 64, F & AM and the Caldwell Consistory. He was a member of the Bloomsburg Elks Lodge 436 and Frosty Valley Country Club. He enjoyed spending time in the summer at Twin Oaks Lodge in Canada.
He was an investment advisor, last working for Lincoln Investment, Wyncote. He established the Bloomsburg office and managed it for 25 years, retiring in May, 2003. He was elected to the Lincoln Investments Hall of Fame.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Michael E. Hamilton, on April 22, 2010 and by a sister, Gloria Lang in 1995.
Surviving are his wife, the former Clara Franks, with whom he celebrated 72 years of marriage on April 14, 2019; two daughters: Kathryn H. “Kathy’, wife of Joseph G. Riedel, Dana Point, Calif. and Ann E., wife of William “Bill” Mclaughlin, Bloomsburg; six grandchildren: Jason Riedel, and his wife Gorjana; Christy, wife of Don Fann; Jordan Rawlins, and his wife Gwen; Justin Rawlins, and his fiance’ Danielle; Devin McLaughlin, and his wife Morgan; Leigh Ann Hamilton; six great-grandchildren: Carter and Emma Fann; Tristan and Sienna Riedel; Graeme and Henry Rawlins; a nephew, Michael Lang and a niece, Justine Lang.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 2 p. m. in the Dean W. Kriner, Inc., Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 325 Market Street, Bloomsburg, with the Rev. James B. Robertson, interim rector of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church officiating. Interment will follow in New Rosemont Cemetery with military honors by the combined veteran’s group. Viewing at the funeral home from 1-2 p. m.
