Eugene R. "Pete" Wawroski, age 85, 90 E. 11th Street, Bloomsburg, died late Sunday, December 1, 2013 in Geisinger Medical Center, Danville. He had been in failing health for two months.
Born in Bloomsburg on July 27, 1928, he was a son of the late Stanley and Catherine (Juskoviak) Wawroski. A 1948 graduate of Catawissa High School, he resided in Catawissa most of his life until moving to Bloomsburg in 2006.
He was a member of St. Columba Catholic Church, Bloomsburg; life member and past commander of the Catawissa American Legion Post 541; life member of the Catawissa V.F.W. Post # 8306; and service officer for 53 years.
Eugene was employed at the former Catawissa Appliance Co. and Emenee Shirt Factory, both of Catawissa, prior to being drafted into the US Army in 1950. While with the Army, he served as a radio operator, took basic training in Ft. Benning, Ga. and spent 18 months in Germany as part of the occupational forces until he was discharged in 1952.
After returning home, Eugene worked at the former Magee Carpet Company, Bloomsburg and Met Life Insurance before becoming a clerk for the US Postal Service in 1963. In 1973 he began his term as Postmaster first in Numidia and then in 1978 transferred to Catawissa, retiring in 1988.
He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Charlotte (Miller) Bunge on August 24, 2004; five sisters: Victoria Wawroski, Alberta Wawroski, Mary Stott, Helen Lunger and Regina Huber; and by a brother, Leonard Wawroski.
Surviving are two children: Janice M., wife of Ronnie Bellum and Brian E. Wawroski, wife Mishelle, all of Bloomsburg; four granddaughters: Angela, wife of Keith Crossley; Tiffany Bellum; Alyssa Wawroski and Emily Wawroski; a great grandson, Stone Keller; five step-children: Patsy, wife of Jon Hess; Linda, wife of Mike Adams, all of Catawissa; Carol Hartman, companion Rod Yost, Williamsport; James Bunge, wife Lorraine, and Robert Bunge, all of Catawissa; seven step-grandchildren; 12 step-great grandchildren; and two sisters: Margaret Kondrchek, Berwick and Dorothy C. Valeski, Bloomsburg.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday at 1 p.m. in St. Columba Catholic Church, 342 Iron Street, Bloomsburg with his pastor, Msgr. Robert E. Lawrence, officiating. Interment in St. Paulâs Reformed Cemetery, Numidia with military honors performed by the Catawissa area veterans group. Friends may call from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday, 11:30 a. m. to 12:30 p. m. at the Dean W. Kriner, Inc. Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 325 Market Street, Bloomsburg. Christian wake services will be held at 7:30 p.m.
