F. Richard Schilling, age 98, of Sherwood Village, Bloomsburg, died at his home early Monday morning, August 5, 2024, after an illness.
Born in Merchantville, New Jersey on March 14, 1926, he was a son of the late Frank and Freda Schilling. He was a 1944 graduate of Bloomsburg High School and resided in Bloomsburg for many years.
Earlier in his life, he was employed at the former U.S. Radium Corporation in Bloomsburg. He later taught school for several years in Bradenton, Florida. Following that, he was employed by the U.S. Government, working in the space program in Titusville, Florida. He was last employed by the U.S. Government in Philadelphia.
Richard was a member of the Bloomsburg Elks Lodge 436 and the Valley of Bloomsburg American Legion Post 243. He enjoyed playing golf and fishing.
He served with the U.S. Air Force during World War II.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, the former Mary Ruth O’Neal, on February 17, 1995; a son, F. Richard Schilling, Jr. on March 31, 2011; and by his longtime companion, Jean L. Rhone on September 17, 2023.
Surviving is his daughter, Teri Ann Schilling, of Reading; grandson, Christian B. Zollers, and his wife Jennifer, of Morristown, New Jersey; granddaughter, Kelly Bohn, of Muhlenburg Township; and four great-grandsons, Alex, Avery, Bennett, and Finn.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 1 p.m. in the Dean W. Kriner Inc. Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 325 Market St., Bloomsburg, with the Rev. Dr. Joel L. Zeiders, pastor of St. Matthew Lutheran Church, officiating. Interment will follow in New Rosemont Cemetery. Graveside military honors will be preformed by the U.S. Air Force and the combined American Legion Post 273 and VFW Post 804.
