Fred C. Derr, age 95, a guest at Elmcroft of Berwick, died at 10:37 p. m. Wednesday, January 2, 2019 at the Geisinger Medical Center, Danville,, where he was admitted earlier in the day.
Born in Scott Township on December 31, 1923, he was a son of the late Arthur C. and Edna (Krum) Derr. His early life was spent in Catawissa and he graduated from the former Catawissa High School.
Fred lived in Catawissa from 1996 until 2011 when he entered Elmcroft; Freeland from 1987 to 1996 and in the Harrisburg area for 24 years prior to that.
He was a carpenter by trade and worked in construction for much of his life and earlier worked at the former Catawissa Lumber Co.
Fred attended the Victory Baptist Church in Bloomsburg while he resided in Catawissa. He was an avid Bible reader and had read the Bible in its entirety several times. He also enjoyed playing cards.
He served with the US Army for four years during World War II serving in the Asiatic- Pacific Theater of the war. He was a member of the Catawissa American Legion Post 541.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 36 years, the former Thelma L. Tobias, on Oct. 21, 1995; by three sisters: Mary Anne Derr, Sarah Gottschal and Helen Morgan and a granddaughter, Amy.
Surviving are two daughters: Vickie L., wife of Edward Fink, Berwick and Gail Moore, Mifflinville; a step daughter, Mary Ann, wife of John Prokopvich, Freeland; three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Private services and viewing will be for the immediate family in the Dean W. Kriner, Inc., Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 325 Market Street, Bloomsburg. Interment will follow in Elan Memorial Park, Lime Ridge, where military honors will be performed by the honor guard from Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8306, Catawissa.
