George F. Gehrig, age 92, 314 E. Market Street, Danville, died at his home at 9:50 p. m. on Saturday, May 12, 2018, after an illness, surrounded by his family.
Born in Danville on May 9, 1926, he was a son of the late J. Frank and Sara M. (Cripple) Gehrig. He was a lifelong resident of Danville and a 1944 graduate of Danville High School. Shortly after graduating, he enlisted in the U. S. Army, serving in World War II from October, 1944 to July, 1946, as a member of the Medical Detachment of the 23rd Infantry Division. After returning home he enrolled at the former Bloomsburg State Teachers College, graduating with a Batchelors Degree in education in 1949. He earned his Masters Degree in education from Bucknell University, Lewisburg, in 1951.
George taught mathematics in the Danville school system for a number of years before becoming the district Business Manager. He retired in 1982 after 35 years of service.
He was a lifelong member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, where he served on the church council for many years, including several terms as president. He also sang in the church choir most of his life..
George was a member of the Montour County Historical Society, where he served on the board of directors and also as treasurer for many years. He also belonged to American Legion Post 40, Danville.
He enjoyed collecting, restoring and showing antique cars with his lifelong friend Gene Shipe. A bicyclist, he toured every inch of Danville on his bicycle and knew every nook and cranny.
Upon retirement he met with a group of fellow retirees every Wednesday for breakfast and conversation. This tradition continued for years, spanning four decades. They referred to themselves as "The Good Old Boys".
George enjoyed annual family trips to the New Jersey shore, beginning with their honeymoon in Wildwood, New Jersey. He was a mentor, friend and care-giver to all five of his grandchildren, and left an indelible mark on all of their lives.
Surviving are his wife, the former Betty Mae Keil, with whom he celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary on August 6, 2017; daughters: Georgia L. Jones, Danville and Linda S., wife of Wayne Tessarvich, Danville; five grandchildren: Joshua R. Jones, and his wife Melanie; Zachary D. G. Jones. and his wife Jennifer; Sara M. Tessarvich; Anna B. Tessarvich; Leah E. Tessarvich; two great-grandchildren: Carlie A. Jones and Zoe N. Jones; three nieces and one nephew.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Fay G. Clark and a brother, Earl Gehrig.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 2 p. m. in Trinity Lutheran Church, 215 E. Market Street, Danville, with his pastor, Rev. Trevor J. Hahn, officiating. Interment will follow in Odd Fellows Cemetery with military honors by the American Legion Post 40 Honor Guard.
Viewing will be on Wednesday from 6 -8 p.m. at the Roat-Kriner Funeral Home, 1133 Bloom Road, Danville or at the Church on Thursday from 1-2 p. m. The family will provide flowers. Memorials may be sent in his name to either Trinity Lutheran Church at the above address or to the Montour County Historical Society, 1 Bloom Street, Danville, PA 17821.
