GEORGE D. JOHNS
George D. Johns, age 83, 4306 Old Berwick Road, Bloomsburg (Almedia) died at 8:07 a. m. Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2012, in the emergency room of the Bloomsburg Hospital, after being stricken at his home.
Born in Berwick on June 28, 1928, he was a son of the late Clarence A. and Lorena M. (Girton) Johns. He resided in Almedia for much of his life and was a 1946 graduate of Bloomsburg High School.
George was employed by Doyle and the late Oren Bird, owners of Bird Dray Service making deliveries for Sears Roebuck & Co., for over 40 years, retiring in 1993. He also worked as a security person for the Bloomsburg Fair for many years and had worked there during the Sportsman Show last weekend. He had also worked for the late John Autotore Auction Service.
He was a member of the Lime Ridge United Methodist Church.
George was an avid fan of Central Columbia High School sports, attending many athletic events.
He served with the US Army during the Korean War.
Surviving are his wife, the former Virginia A. Bellum, with whom he celebrated his 57th wedding anniversary on June 12, 2011; two sons: George D. Johns, Jr., Bloomsburg and Dennis D. Johns, Mifflinville; four grandchildren: Jason, Ashley, Daniel and Danielle; three great-grandchildren: Ava, Emma and Kaleb; a brother, Roland Johns, and his wife Barbara, Bloomsburg; three sisters: Loretta Daggett, Bloomsburg; Shirley Kishbaugh, Nescopeck; Betty Johns, Bloomsburg; and three half brothers: Larry A. Deitterick, Gary L. Deitterick, and Barry G. Deitterick, all of Berwick.
Funeral services will be held on Friday at 2 p. m. in the Dean W. Kriner, Inc., Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 325 Market St., Bloomsburg, with his pastor, Rev. Terry J. Brosius officiating. Interment in New Rosemont Cemetery, Espy. Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 1-2 p. m.
