George R. âPorkâ Coombs, age 86, 367 Shickshinny Lake Road, Shickshinny, died at 10:28 a. m. Thursday, June 13, 2013 at the Berwick Hospital Center, where he was a patient for several days. He had been in failing health for several years.
Born in Nanticoke on February 7, 1927, he was a son of the late Caleb and Anna (Welliver) Coombs. He resided in Huntington Mills most of his life and was a 1944 graduate of the former Huntington Mills High School.
Pork was last employed at Corrigan, Brothers, Wilkes-Barre, retiring in 1989. Earlier he was employed at the former Huntington Dairy in Huntington Mills for 24 years.
He was a member of the Town Hill United Methodist Church. Earlier in his life he served as chief of the Huntington Valley Fire Co., Huntington Mills for a number of years.
Surviving are his wife, the former Evelyn R. McHenry, with whom he celebrated his 66th wedding anniversary on September 4, 2012; a daughter, Sandra A. Robbins, Dallas; a son, Rodney A. Coombs, Shickshinny; a daughter in law, Donna Coombs, Shickshinny; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a brother, Donald Coombs, Shickshinny; and a sister, Nancy Creveling, Stillwater.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 11 a. m. in the Town Hill United Methodist Church 417 Town Hill Road, Shickshinny, with his pastor, Rev. Bethany P. Wood officiating. Interment in Scott Cemetery, Waterton, Huntington Township.
Friends may call at the Church on Tuesday from 10-11 a. m.
