Harold W. Ammerman, Sr., age 96, formerly of 100 Wall Street, Danville, was taken by his guardian angel to be with his Lord on Saturday evening, March 3, 2018 at the Emmanuel Center For Nursing, Danville, where he resided for 5 years.
Born in Danville on September 11, 1921, he was a son of the late William and Alice (Hawk) Ammerman.
He was a member of the St. Paul’s Emmanuel United Methodist Church, American Legion Post 40, VFW Post 298, and Washies Fire Co., all of Danville. He especially enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling and most importantly, spending time with his family. He served on the board of the Odd Fellows Cemetery, Co., for 40 years.
Harold was a well known house painter in Danville and also painted for several businesses. He was last employed as a painter by Danville State Hospital, retiring in 1983.
He served with the U. S. Army during World War II with the 171st Field Artillery Battalion of the 45th Division. He served in Sicily, Naples, Foggia Rome, Arno, Southern France, Rhineland and in Central Europe. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, Europe African Middle Eastern Service Medal with six bronze stars and one bronze arrowhead.
Harold was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 62 years, the former Claire E. Cripps on August 9, 2009; and a son, Harold William Ammerman, Jr., on March 31, 2009.
Surviving are a son,. John H. Ammerman, and his wife Cindy, Danville; a daughter, Alice, wife of Rick Temple, Catawissa; a daughter in-law, Linda Ammerman, Bloomsburg; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 11 a. m. in the Roat-Kriner Funeral Home, 1133 Bloom Road, Danville, with his pastor, Pastor Gregory L. Molter officiating. Interment will follow in Fairview Cemetery where military honors will be accorded by the American Legion Post 40 Honor Guard. Viewing will be from 10-11 a. m.
The family will provide flowers. Contributions may be made in his memory to St. Paul’s Emmanuel United Methodist Church, 3 East Mahoning Street, Danville, PA 17821.
