HARRIET E. ADAMS
Harriet E. Adams, age 102, 409 W. Main St., Bloomsburg, died at 11:30 p. m. Saturday, Oct. 22, 2011 at Balanced Care At Bloomsburg (a nursing facility) in Scott Township, where she was a patient for 3 months. Previously she resided at Loyalton of Bloomsburg for 4 1/2 years.
Born on Jan. 10, 1909 in Rupert, Montour Township, she was a daughter of the late Lillian C. (Adams) Vanderslice. She spent her entire lifetime in the Bloomsburg area, graduating from Bloomsburg High School in 1926. She went on to the former Bloomsburg Normal School where she graduated in 1928. Later she attended Bucknell University, Lewisburg, where she was certified as a principal in 1956.
Harriet taught elementary school for 45 years, retiring in 1974. She began her teaching career in a one room school in Rush Township, Northumberland County and later taught at the former Third Street Elementary School and last at the Memorial Elementary School, both in Bloomsburg. She taught first, third and sixth grades during her career.
In recent years, when Harriet was out in public she frequently was greeted by former pupils that remembered her as ":Miss Adams", their former teacher. She enjoyed these brief encounters with her former pupils.
Harriet was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church for 85 years, having joined in 1926. For many years she was a member of the Bloomsburg Women's Civic Club, Bloomsburg Hospital Auxiliary and the Pennsylvania Retired Teachers Association. She was also a longtime member of Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority.
She was the last of her family, being survived only by several distant cousins residing out of state. Her adopted family consisted of Doris T. Creveling Levan and her sons and grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 11 a. m. in the Dean W. Kriner, Inc., Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 325 Market St., Bloomsburg, with her pastor, Rev. Jay E. Jones officiating. Interment in New Rosemont Cemetery, Espy.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 6-8 p. m. Tuesday.
