Harriet L. Kocher, age 94, Lake Ridge, Va., died at 1:35 p. m. Tuesday, August 21, 2012 at the Westminster At Lake Ridge Nursing Center, Lake Ridge. She was born on Sept. 10, 1917 at the Bloomsburg Hospital, a daughter of the late Dr. Frank T. and Anna (Kline) Kocher.
She was a 1935 graduate of the former Scott Township High School, Espy, where she was the class valedictorian. She went on to graduate from the former Bloomsburg State Teachers College in 1939.
Harriet taught business education at Souderton High School from 1939 to 1945 and in Milford, Del., from 1945 to 1948.
She entered the corporate business world in 1947 on a part-time basis as a relief manager at various motels. In 1958 she began working for Quality Inns International as a desk clerk, becoming a manager of various motels, to overseeing the construction, to sales assistance and ended her tenure with Quality as Director of their Western Region, headquartered in Phoenix, Arizona. Until recently she was still associated as a consultant.
The International Hotel & Motel Assn .presents an annual award known as the âHarriet Kocher Awardâ and she was the first recipient. In 1988 the Bloomsburg University Alumni presented her with their âDistinguished Service Awardâ in recognition of her accomplishments in the corporate world and also for her work with the BU alumni group in the Washington, DC area. She also received several awards from the Virginia Travel Industry, Northern Virginia Motel Assn. and Metro Washington Motel Assn. of America.
At Westminister Retirement Community she served a co-ordinator for weekly Kaffee Klatches and as a Forum Committee member.
Harriet traveled in all of the United States, except for Alaska. She had a strong bond with her extended family.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church, Lake Ridge, Va. and the Miquon Chapter, Daughters of the American Colonists (DAC), Bloomsburg.
Harriet was preceded in death by three brothers: Frank T. Kocher in 2006; Ernest D. Kocher in 1995 and James W. Kocher in 1949.
Surviving are five siblings: Dorothy, wife of Billy D. Pugh, Newtown; Charles L. Kocher, Berwick; Ellis S. Kocher, and his wife Miriam, Norristown; George E. Kocher, and his wife Fran, Perkasie; Bernice, wife of Dale E. Thomas, Bloomsburg and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services swill be held on Saturday, Sept. 8, 2012, at 11 a. m. in the Shiloh Bible Church, 123 Church St., Bloomsburg (Almedia), with the Church pastor, Rev. Dr. Douglas H. Lyon officiating. Private interment will be in the Dodson Cemetery, Huntington Township, Luzerne County.
