Herman J. "Al" Kurtz, age 100, formerly of 412 W. Main St., Bloomsburg, died at 4 p.m. Tuesday, April 27, 2010 at the Columbia-Montour Hospice at Maria Hall, Danville.
Born in Bethlehem on October 15, 1909, he was a son of the late Herman R. and Lena R. (Fenninger) Kurtz. He resided in Bloomsburg since 1948 and formerly Williamsport and Bethlehem. He was a 1928 graduate of Liberty High School, Allentown.
He was the owner of Al's Cafe on Main Street, Bloomsburg from 1948-1960 and Awning King, Bloomsburg from 1960-1979, when he retired.
Al was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Bloomsburg. He was a life member of the Bloomsburg Elks Lodge and Liberty Fire Company. Other memberships include the Steinbacker American Legion Post 617, Williamsport; and the Bloomsburg Fireman's Relief Association.
He served with the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II.
Al was preceded in death by his wife of 45 years, the former Helen Ann Zipp on December 3, 2001; two sisters: Elsie Yallis and Martha Kurtz; and a brother, Carl Kurtz.
Surviving is a son, H. Robert Kurtz, Monroeton; daughter, Lois, wife of Raymond Schmidt, Nottingham; eight grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
Services will be held on Friday at 2 p.m. in the Dean W. Kriner, Inc. Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 325 Market St., Bloomsburg, with his pastor, Rev. Joel L. Zeiders, officiating. Interment in New Rosemont Cemetery, Espy. Friends may call from 1-2 p.m. Friday.
