Howard J. Hippensteel, D.D.S.
Howard J. Hippensteel, D.D.S., age 90, Palm Harbor, Florida died at 6:37 a. m. Saturday, Dec. 6, 2014 at the Florida Hospital North Pinellas, Tarpon Springs, Fla. after a lengthy illness.
Born in Espy on July 18, 1924, he was a son of the late Lester L. and Ruth E. (Shaffer) Hippensteel.
Howard was a 1942 graduate of the former Scott Township High School, where he was an outstanding athlete. Following high school he enrolled at Gettysburg College and dropped out to enlist in the US Army Air Corps. Following his military duty, he returned to Gettysburg College and graduated in 1948. He then enrolled in Temple University School of Dentistry, graduating in 1952.
While serving with the Air Corps, he served as a co-pilot and made many flights to Okinawa, the Philippines and Korea, attaining the rank of 1st Lieutenant.
Following his service in the military, he established his dental practice in Quakertown, and resided there for more than 40 years, retiring to Palm Harbor in 1997.
Howard was a member of the Lutheran Church of the Palms, Palm Harbor. He was an avid golfer.
Howard was preceded in death on Feb. 17, 2009, by his wife, the former Frances A. Baum of Palmyra, Lebanon County, whom he married on July 3, 1948, ending a marriage of 60 years. Also preceding him were two sisters: Dorothy J. May on May 29, 1972 and Eloise J. Hippensteel, Ph.D. on Feb. 16, 1990; and a brother, Kenneth J. Hippensteel on Aug. 27, 1976.
Surviving are four children: Barbara H. Stokes, who resided with him; Joseph B. Hippensteel, Solana Beach, Calif.; David L. Hippensteel, and his wife Carole, Chapmansboro, Tenn.; Susan H., wife of Dale Neubauer, Bend, Ore.; eight grandchildren; and a sister, Mollie, wife of William C. Harrell, Espy.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, Dec. 22, 2014 , at 11 a. m. in St. John Lutheran Church, 2575 Old Berwick Road, Bloomsburg (Espy) with the pastor, Rev. Gordon E. Smith officiating. Interment with military honors will be made in Creveling Cemetery, Almedia. There will be no viewing. The family will greet friends at the Church from 10-11 a. m.
