Janet I. Mergler
Janet I. Mergler, age 91, a resident of Vintage Knolls, Danville, died there at 4:30 a. m. Saturday, January 11, 2014.
Born in Addison, New York on June 28, 1922, she was a daughter of the late Matthew F. and Edyth (Neilson) Whitmore.
She resided at Vintage Knolls for two years and previously in Bloomsburg for 10 years. Most of her life was spent in Addison, New York.
Janet was a 1940 graduate of Addison Central High School and received her B.A. degree from Cortland College, Cortland, N.Y. and her M. A. degree from Elmira College, Elmira, N.Y.
She taught English at several schools, last teaching at Addison Central High School, where she was chairperson of the English Department, until retiring in 1978.
Janet was an active volunteer for the American Red Cross in Addison. She enjoyed knitting, reading, doing the New York Times crossword puzzle and was an excellent baker.
Preceding her in death were her husband, Walter Joseph Mergler on May 13, 2007; a sister, Barbara Whitmore; and a brother, Matthew F. Whitmore, Jr.
Janet is survived by three daughters: Carol E., wife of William K. Bartley, Columbia, Maryland; Nancy L. Mergler, wife of Ronald Schleifer, Norman, Okla.; Edith M. Mergler, Bloomsburg; four grandchildren: Meredith J. Peters, Snohomish, Wash.; John W. Bartley, Seattle, Wash.; Cyrus J. Schleifer, Durham, North Carolina; and Benjamin W. Schleifer, Oakland, Calif.
Memorial services will be held in Bloomsburg in the spring at a time and place to be announced.
