Jean L. Magill, age 88, 239 E. 10th Street, Bloomsburg, died at 3:50 a.m. Thursday, March 13, 2014 in Pleasant Valley Manor Nursing Home, Stroudsburg, following a brief illness. She had resided there since April 2013.
Born in Hunlock Twp., Luzerne County on February 19, 1926, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Bessie (Davenport) Hummel. A 1943 graduate of Harter High School in West Nanticoke, she had been a resident of Bloomsburg since 1949.
Jean was last employed as the head cook at Bloomsburg Memorial ElementarySchool, retiring in 1988. Previously she had worked in the snack bar at Bloomsburg University, Kresslerâs Greenhouses, Fernville and the former Rea & Derrick Drug Store, Bloomsburg.
She was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Bloomsburg; and participated in the Women of Evangelical Lutheran Church and Quilting Groups. She was also a member of the Bloomsburg Hospital Auxiliary, and volunteered for Red Cross Blood Drives.
She was preceded in death by her husband, C. Harold Magill on May 3, 1985 and by a grandson, Michael J. Johnson on August 13, 2012.
Surviving are two daughters: JoAnn, wife of Craig A. Johnson, Olney, Md.; and Betty M., wife of James W. Kunkle, E. Stroudburg; three grandchildren: Jeffrey Johnson, Baltimore, Md.; Julie, wife of Ted Schmittel, Nazareth; and Lori Stewart, E. Stroudsburg; three great-granddaughters: Hailey Schmittel, Addison Schmittel and Olivia Schmittel; several nieces and one nephew.
Funeral Services will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. in the Chapel of St. Matthew Lutheran Church, 123 N. Market Street, Bloomsburg with her pastor, Rev. Dr. Joel L. Zeiders officiating. Interment in New Rosemont Cemetery, Espy. Friends may call in the church parlor from 10-11 a.m. Saturday.
The family will provide flowers. Memorials may be sent to St. Matthew Lutheran Church.
