John B. Maturani
John B. Maturani, age 86, 617 Sunset Drive, Bloomsburg, died at 6:35 p. m. Thursday, October 29, 2015 at Geisinger Columbia Montour Hospice at Maria Hall, Danville where he was a patient for one week. He was seriously ill for six weeks.
Born in Milton on January 30, 1929, he was a son of the late Antonio and Vitalina (DeNatale) Maturani. He was a 1946 graduate of Milton High School and a 1953 graduate of the former Bloomsburg State Teachers College.
John taught history and driver education at Danville High School for 34 years, retiring in 1989. He served as athletic director for 23 years and as an assistant football coach for 16 years, also at Danville High School. In 1948 he earned a place on the Tom Harmon Little All American Team and in 1991 he was inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame at Bloomsburg University. Later he was honored by being inducted into the Danville High School Hall of Fame.
John was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Danville; the Valley of Bloomsburg Post 273, American Legion and the Danville Elks lodge. He served as president of Sunny Brook Park in Danville for many years and also was a member of the Valley Township Planning Commission.
He was a member of the Pennsylvania National Guard, which was activated during the Korean War.
John enjoyed fishing and spending time on his boat. An expert carpenter, he built several homes. He and his wife enjoyed traveling throughout the United States, Europe and other destinations.
Surviving are his wife, the former Dawn Craig, with whom he would have celebrated his 65th wedding anniversary on November 11th; five children: John L. Maturani, and his wife Kimberly, Benton; Lisa, wife of Eric Wintersteen, Grimes Land, North Carolina; Toni D., wife of Leo Barrile, Bloomsburg; Matthew C. Maturani, and his wife JoAnn, West Chester; Marc A. Maturani, Danville; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandsons; a sister, Rose Reedy, New Jersey; and two brothers: Joseph Maturani and Gene Maturani, and his wife Shirley, all of Milton. There are also a number of nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life service will be held on Tuesday at 11 a. m. in the Dean W. Kriner, Inc., Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 325 Market Street, Bloomsburg. The family will greet friends from 10-11 a. m.
