JOHN R. SHUMAN, Ph.D.
John R. Shuman, Ph.D., age 101, Mainville Drive, Bloomsburg, died unexpectedly at his home and was pronounced death on Monday, July 11, 2011 at 4:50 p. m. At his death he was surrounded by the dogwood trees he planted and loved.
Born on June 6, 1910 in Montgomery, he was a son of the late John R. and Annie M. (Troxel) Shuman.
He earned his Batchelor of Science degree from Penn State University in 1934; his Master of Philosophy degree from the University of Wisconsin in 1937 and his Ph.D. was also earned at the University of Wisconsin in 1938. His graduate studies were in the plant genetics department of the University of Wisconsin.
John did extensive research in Guatemala and Switzerland as well as other locales. He taught at a number of universities, including the teaching of plant genetics at the University of George in Athens, Ga. and at the Arkansas Polytechnic College, Russellville, Ark. He last taught in the mathematics department of North Dakota State University, Fargo, N.D.
He enjoyed traveling, especially in Europe and Central America where he researched extensively. His hobby was photography and in his later years, he enjoyed cultivating the foliage at his Catawissa Township farm.
John was proud to have been a Boy Scout, joining while he was in elementary school in Bloomsburg and went on to become an Eagle Scout while a member of Troop 6 at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Bloomsburg. He camped at Camp Lavigne, Benton and also at Treasure Island. and attended a national jamboree in Rhode Island where he served as a cook. He was honored by the Columbia Montour Council, Boy Scouts of America in 2010 as the oldest Eagle Scout in the Council.
He is survived by a sister, Sara Keppley, Robesonia and a number of nieces and nephews.
A brother, Harry G. Shuman, preceded him in death on January 4, 2008.
At his request, there will not be any funeral services or viewing. He will be intered on the Troxel family plot in the Turbotville Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
