JOHN G. WANICH
John G. Wanich, age 82, 12 Columbia Avenue, Bloomsburg, went to be with his Lord and Savior at 2:30 a. m. Monday, October 26, 2009 at his home. He was in poor health for several years, and was diagnosed with cancer in April, 2009. He was under the care of hospice since September. When he died he was surrounded by his loving family and supported by exceptional caregivers from Columbia Montour Home Health and Hospice and Griswold Special Care..
Born in Lightstreet on March 29, 1927, he was the middle child of five born to the late M. Collins and Clara (Robbins) Wanich. He attended the former Scott Township High School until the age of 17 when he enlisted in the US Navy, serving honorably in World War II aboard the USS Bonhomme Richard.
John worked most of his adult life as a painter, first with R. Terwilliger and H. Walters, before he was employed by Danville State Hospital where he worked for over 30 years, retiring in 1989. During his retirement he enjoyed many wonderful fishing and hunting trips with family and friends, picnics and car rides through the beautiful Pennsylvania mountains. He also enjoyed daily walks around the Town of Bloomsburg, planting and harvesting a large vegetable garden, and spending times with his family and many friends.
He was a life long member of the Lightstreet United Methodist Church. He loved attending church, spending time with his church friends and pastors, and volunteered many hours painting or helping with other church related events. He also was a life member of the Lightstreet Community Fire Company.
Surviving are his wife, the former Genevieve Hartman, with whom he celebrated his 53rd wedding anniversary on May 26, 2009; a daughter, Christine K., wife of Robert Bradway, King of Prussia; a son, John G. Wanich, II, Bloomsburg; a grandson, Adam Bradway, who was the apple of his eye; two brothers: Donald Wanich, and his wife Molly, Pottsville and M. Clair Wanich, and his wife Doloris, Berwick; a brother in law, John Dudeck, Bloomsburg; a sister-in-law, Rita Wanich, Carlisle; and many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews. He will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved him.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the care of the Dean W. Kriner, Inc., Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 325 Market Street, Bloomsburg. Interment will be at the convenience of the family in Lightstreet "Highland" Cemetery. Public memorial services will be held at his Church at a later date.
