Joseph T. Keller, age 87, 122 Arbutus Park Road, Bloomsburg, died at 12 noon on Wednesday, April 18, 2012 in the emergency room of Geisinger Medical Center, Danville. He had been in failing health for two years.
Born in Scranton, on January 13, 1925, he was the only child of the late Joseph P. and Mary (Flanagan) Keller.
As a member of the US Army, he served his country during World War II in the Pacific Theatre from 1943 - 1946. Upon his discharge from the military, he settled in South Florida where he received his BA degree from the University of Miami and his MS degree from Barry College.
Ted taught art and served as the guidance counselor at Rogers Middle School in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. for 25 years, retiring in 1985. He and his wife then moved to Ashland, Ore. where they spent 25 years before moving to Bloomsburg in 2009.
Ted was best known for his involvement in the sport of diving, serving as head coach of the Fort Lauderdale Dive Team for 28 years. He was named the National AAU Age Group Diving Coach of the Year in 1970; recognized as the American Swimming Coaches Association of America, Age Group Diving Coach of the Year in 1969; and recognized as an outstanding contributor by the College Swimming Coaches Association.
His other passion was his life-long involvement with the International Swimming Hall of Fame, where he was named its first Art director in 1968. Ted’s many paintings, sculptures and other works of art are on display at the museum. Ted also served as the meet director for the International Diving Championship hosted by the Hall of Fame for 17 years, an event frequently showcased on national television in the 1970’s.
Ted is survived by his wife, the former Diana Kroll, with whom he celebrated his 50th wedding anniversary on June 24, 2011; his daughter, Meg Keller-Marvin, wife of Stu Marvin, current Bloomsburg University swimming coach and their sons: Robert Marvin and Matthew Marvin, all of Bloomsburg.
There will be no funeral services. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the International Swimming Hall of Fame, 1 Hall of Fame Drive, Fort Lauderdale, Fla. 33316.
