Leo E. Haladay, age 93, 25 Steltz Road, Danville, died at 11:20 p.m. Sunday, January 25, 2015 in the Geisinger-Bloomsburg Hospital, shortly after he was admitted. He was in failing health for six months.
Born in Cleveland Twp., Columbia County on June 7, 1921, he was a son of the late John L. and Victoria (Welkom) Haladay. He resided in Cooper Twp. since 1992, and formerly lived in the Catawissa area.
Leo owned and operated the former Midway Distributors with his brothers for 31 years, retiring in 1986. Earlier he was employed by the former Bloomsburg Mills.
He served as a Sergeant with the US Army during World War II; and served in India, China and Burma.
Leo was raised Catholic, and was a life member of the Catawissa American Legion Post 531. He loved trips to Rehoboth Beach, Del.; was an avid hunter and fisherman; and liked gardening, especially with flowers.
Before being admitted to the hospital, Leo resided at Emeritus for six months, where he was well liked by residents and staff, and was considered to be a real gentleman.
He was preceded in death by his first wife Theda in 1985; his second wife, the former Ruth L. Taylor on January 10, 2012; six brothers: Joseph, Andrew, Michael, John, Frank and Edward Haladay; and three sisters: Ann Lazicki, Cecelia Hess and Martha M. Swisher.
Surviving are three brothers: Anthony Haladay, Danville; Albert Haladay, wife Jane, Sebring, Fla. and Robert Haladay, wife Jane, Bloomsburg; a sister, Helen Biacchi, Berwick; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in the Dean W. Kriner, Inc. Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 325 Market Street, with Msgr. Robert E. Lawrence of St. Columba Catholic Church, Bloomsburg officiating. Interment in Elan Memorial Park, Lime Ridge with military honors by the Catawissa veterans group.
The family will provide flowers. Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 1-2 p.m.
