Leon H. Greenly, age 92, 480 Hillside Drive, Bloomsburg, died at his home at 6 p. m. Sunday, Aug. 5, 2012. He was in failing health for the past year.
Born In Turbotville on Nov. 18, 1919, he was a son of the late Roy and Stella (Moser) Greenly. He moved to Bloomsburg as a young man and was a 1937 graduate of Bloomsburg High School and a 1941 graduate of the former Bloomsburg State Teacherâs College. Later he attended Bucknell Univesity where he earned a M. S. degree.
He resided in Sunken Heights from 1948 to 1976, when he built a new home and moved to his current address in Wonderview.
Leon was a school teacher, beginning his career at the former Scott Township High School, Espy in Sept., 1948, where he taught science for ten years. In 1958 he began teaching at Bloomsburg High School where he taught chemistry and physics until retiring in 1976.
He was a member of the Benton United Presbyterian Church; the Catawissa Boat Club and a former member of the Frosty Valley Gun Club, Danville.
Leon was an avid outdoorsman, who enjoyed hunting, fishing and especially snowmobiling. He was a member of the Washburn Snow Mobile Club and the Madawaska Snow Mobile Club, both in Maine.
Leon was an skilled carpenter, specialized in building and remodeling. He also was an entrepreneur, owning and operating several laudromats in the Bloomsburg are for many years.
He enlisted in the U. S. Army Air Corps in January, 1942 and served in the China, Burma, India campaign of World War II before being discharged in 1945. He then served with the U. S. Air Force Reserves for 22 years, retiring in 1979.
Recently Leon organized and helped celebrate the 75th reunion of the Class of 1937.
Leon was preceded in death by his wife, the former Nellie I. OâNeil, on Feb. 13, 1998; by a grandson, Steffen J. Greenly on Feb. 21, 2008; and by two brothers: Randall and Donald Greenly.
Leon is survived by his companion, Blanche Hopper, who resided with him; three sons: Sidney A. Greenly, and his wife Josephine, Fountain Valley, Calif.; Neil R. Greenly, McMurray; Roger P. Greenly, Tustin, Calif; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. He was the last of his immediate family.
Funeral services will be held on Monday at 11 a. m. in the Dean W. Kriner, Inc., Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 325 Market St., Bloomsburg, with his pastor, Rev. O. Allen Lumpkin officiating. Interment in Elan Memorial Park, Lime Ridge. Viewing will be on Sunday from 2-5 p. m. at the funeral home.
