Leonard E. Bason, age 99, 60 Neitz Road, Northumberland (Nottingham Village) died there on Monday, September 20, 2010 at 2:50 p. m. after being in failing health for two years.
Born in South Centre Township, Columbia County on December 18, 1910, he was a son of the late Myron J. Bason and Zella L. (Redline) Bason Munson. He resided in Bloomsburg most of his life and was a 1928 graduate of Bloomsburg High School. He resided at Nottingham Village for the past seven years and previously lived at The Meadows at Maria Joseph, Danville, for seven years.
Leonard was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, Bloomsburg, since 1930. At the Church he served on many committees, including the board of trustees on which he served for 22 years.
He was a life member of Washington Lodge 265, F & AM, Bloomsburg and a former member of Caldwell Consistory and Irem Temple Shrine. He also was a life member of Bloomsburg Elks Lodge 436 and was a past president of the Bloomsburg Kiwanis Club. In his early life, he served as a Boy Scout leader of Troop 23 which was sponsored by the Bloomsburg Rotary Club and met at the Bloomsburg Town Hall.
Leonard was a charter member of the Frosty Valley Country Club, Danville and a charter member and past president of the Tri-County Personnel Association. He enjoyed gardening and playing golf.
He was employed by the former Magee Carpet Co., Bloomsburg for 45 years holding various positions, including payroll clerk, paymaster, and as personnel director for 24 years. He also served on the board of directors and was secretary of the board.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 72 years, the former Madalyn Hixson of Berwick, who died on June 8, 2004 and by a sister, Lois I. Bason in October, 1931.
Surviving are two sons: James L. Bason, and his wife Elizabeth, Northumberland and Dr. Larry R. Bason, VMD, and his wife Charlotte, Mill Hall; five grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 2:30 p. m. in the Dean W. Kriner, Inc., Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 325 Market Street, Bloomsburg, with his pastor, Rev. Jay E. Jones officiating. Interment in New Rosemont Cemetery, Espy. Friends may call Saturday, 1:30 to 2:30 p. m.
