Lois N. Howe, age 79, 414 W. Third St., Bloomsburg, died at 4:10 p. m. Friday, Feb. 28, 2014  at the Emmanuel Nursing Center At Maria Joseph Manor, Danville, where she was a patient since Oct. 4, 2013. She had been in failing health for several years.

Born in Cleveland Township on May 23, 1934, she was a daughter of the late Howard and Kathryn (Gottshall) Mensch. She was a 1952 graduate of the former Catawissa High School. A resident of Bloomsburg since 1959, she previously resided at White Hall and Catawissa.

Lois  was a nurses aide for 31 years, retiring in 2000. She worked at the former Boone Nursing Home, Eyers Grove and last at the former Gethsemenae Nursing Home in Scott Township.

She attended the Wesley United Methodist Church, Bloomsburg and the Catawissa Senior Center. For the past several years, she bowled in the annual Big Brother’s - Big Sister’s fund raiser. She loved walking, bicycling, camping and playing with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Before the death of her husband, they traveled extensively.

Lois was preceded in death by her husband, Richard C. “Dick” Howe on Dec. 30, 2006 and by two brothers: Marlin Mensch and Carl Mensch.

Surviving are seven children: Deborah Lois, wife of Richard Bucher, Catawissa; Nancy A., wife of Alan Nagle, Bloomsburg; Peggy L., wife of Carl Featherman, Berwick; Jeffrey L. Howe, at home; Betty S., wife of William Corrigan, Sunbury; Jacqueline K., wife of Bryan Lane and Janice M., wife of David Kovalewski, both of Bloomsburg; twelve grandchildren: Mark McDonald, New Market, Md.; Stephanie McDonald, Austin, Texas; Michael Bucher, Danville; Karen Devan, Catawissa; Amy Shaffer, Berwick; Eric Featherman, Beach Haven; Patricia Krichten, Colorado Springs, Colo.; Christine Reed, Valley View; Gabrielle Teter, Sunbury; Stephen Kovalewski, Bagram AFB, Afganistan; Samantha Kovalewski, Spangdahlem AFB, Germany; Kolby Lane, Bloomsburg;  a step grandson, Kristopher Lane, Nescopeck; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Lois is also survived by four sisters: Doris Smith and Ruth, wife of Reuben Herman, both of Catawissa; Dorothy Shepard, Florida; Judy, wife of John Mowery, Catawissa; two sisters-in-law: Emma Jean, wife of Richard Jordan, Danville and Laura Roeder, Catawissa.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 11 a. m. in the Dean W. Kriner, Inc., Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 325 Market St., Bloomsburg, with her pastor, Rev. Dr. Gary D. Weaver officiating. Interment in Elan Memorial Park, Lime Ridge. Viewing will be from 9 to 11 a. m.
