Louise Ann Leech, age 84, a longtime resident of the Germantown section of Philadelphia died on . Friday, August 19, 2011 at the Roxborough Memorial Hospital, Philadelphia, of complications from Parkinson's disease.
Born in Lansdowne on October 7, 1926, she was a daughter of the late Michael J. and Katharine (McCollum) Gallagher, both artists. He was the technical director of the Works Project Administration (WPA) print project in Philadelphia from 1935 - 1943. Louise was making art from a young age. A graduate of Upper Darby High School in 1944, she went on to study at the Fleischer Art Memorial and the PA Academy of Fine Arts from 1945 - 1949.
At age 20, Louise suffered a near fatal case of spincal meningitis. Upon recovering, she never lost the deep sense of gratitude for being alive, and throughout her life, she encouraged and helped many others to pursue their ambitions and artistic passions.
She worked in commercial and textile design and as a librarian at the Free Library of Philadelphia before going on to earn a BFA and BS Art from Tyler School of Art at Temple University in 1954.
A committed and disciplined artist with an unquenchable curiosity about the natural world and materials and process, Louise made marionettes, paintings, drawings, prints, ceramics and sculpture. Numerous trips to Europe with her husband and daughters, summer visits to Cape May Point, N.J. and especially her house and garden in Germantown provided rich inspiration.
Louise exhibited in galleries in PA and New York City and in Philadelphia in the Rittenhouse Square Annual and Artist Equity. She has work in the permanent collection of the Free Library of Philadelphia and in numerous private collections in the USA. Louise Leech is represented by the Susan Teller Gallery in New York City.
