Mabel G. Girton, age 101, 15 Ann Drive, Danville and formerly of Bloomsburg, died at 8:30 a. m. Wednesday, March 6, 2013, at the Emmanuel Center for Nursing & Rehabilitation, Danville, where she was a patient since March 25, 2011.
Born in Locust Township on November 10, 1911, she was a daughter of the late Frank and Tivilia (Long) Hughes. She resided in Bloomsburg from 1933 to 1995 when she moved to the Meadows at Maria Joseph, Danville.
Mabel was a 1929 graduate of the former Locust Township High School. She was co-owner of the former Girtonâs Floor & Covering, Main Street, Bloomsburg, retiring in 1974.
She was the oldest member of Good Shepherd United Methodist Church, Bloomsburg, where she was a member since 1934. She enjoyed playing cards, dominos and other games.
Mabel was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Carl F. Girton, on June 18, 1995; by two brothers, John Hughes and Guy Hughes; and a sister, Pauline Peters.
Surviving are a son, John R. Girton, and his wife Barbara, Redding, Calif; a daughter, Susan A. Binley, Charlotte, North Carolina; six grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. There are also two nephews and a niece.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday at 2:30 p. m. in the Grace United Church of Christ (Mill Grove), 1 Pension Street, Catawissa, with her pastor, Audrey M. Brosious officiating. Interment in Mill Grove Cemetery. Friends may call at the Church from 1:30 to 2:30 p. m.
