MARGARET M. "Peg" ROOT
Margaret M. "Peg" Root, age 94, 161 Rainbow Hill Road, Benton, died at 2:30 p. m. Saturday, May 12, 2012 at her home after being in failing health for two months.
Born in Philadelphia on Dec. 12, 1917, she was a daughter of the late Edward and Olga (Schams) Flanagan. She resided in the Benton area since 1978 and previously lived in Palmyra, N.J. for 25 years.
Peg was employed by the former AT & T Co., in Phila. early in her life and later was by Clover Department Stores, Cinnaminson, N.J.
She was an active member of Christ The King Catholic Church, Benton, participating in many Church related activities. She also was active with the Friends of Columbia County Traveling Library; a bridge club and a book club.
Peg served with the U.S. Army during World War II as a dental hygienist.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, John Y. "Jack" Root on Jan. 11, 1995.
Surviving are three sons: Christopher J. Root, and his wife Jan, St. Charles, Mo.; Stephen E. Root, and his wife Susan, Benton; Gregory J. Root, Rocky Point, New York; and eight grandchildren. She was the last of her immediate family.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday at 11 a. m. in Christ The King Catholic Church, Mendenhall Lane, Benton, with her pastor, Rev. Timothy D. Marcoe as the Celebrandt. Interment will follow in Waller Cemetery.
The family will receive friends on Monday from 6-8 p. m. at the Dean W. Kriner, Inc., Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Benton. A Christian Wake service will be held at 7:45 p. m.
