Mary Andrea Ramos

Mary Andrea (Delgado) Ramos, age 93, of Bloomsburg, returned to her heavenly home on Thursday,  October 19, 2017 in Bloomsburg. She received her last rites from her nephew, Father Manuel Rodriquez Delgado, C.Ss.R., Major Superior of the Conference of Redemptorists  in Latin American and the Caribbean.

Mary was born on November 30, 1923 in Arecibo, Puerto Rico, a daughter of the late Teodoro and Josefa (Betancourt) Delgado. She graduated from high school in 1940 and pursued an education in nursing and was employed at Ramey Air Force Base in Aquadilla, Puerto Rico.

In 1945 she moved stateside to support her family after the deployment of three of her brothers in World War II. Mary was proud to come from a family of military service, including her cousins, Jose Victor Toledo, a First Lieutenant in the U. S. Army, who served in the Judge Advocate Corps, and was appointed Justice of the U. S. District Court, District of Puerto Rico, eventually becoming Chief Justice; and Colonel  Manuel  Siverio, who after serving 26 years in the U. S. Army, including service from World War II to Vietnam, was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal in 2016 at the age of 95.

She was an accomplished seamstress, employed as a dressmaker for  over 40 years. Her family remembers her as a kind, intelligent, and loving mother and grandmother. She was a patient teacher with a knack for cooking, a green thumb, and love of animals, big and small. Mary was a creative spirit with a quick wit and great sense of humor.

Mary married Manuel Ramos in 1946 in New York and together they raised four daughters. He preceded her in death in 2005. Also preceding her in death were two daughters, Irma Deida and Evelyn Jimenez; and her siblings: Catalina Blas, Felisa Gonzalez, Ramon Delgado, Andres Delgado, Josefina Boneta, Juan Delgado and Jose Delgado.

Surviving are two daughters: Nydia, wife of Ivan Vazquez, with whom she resided,  and Hilda Perez; four grandchildren: Evelyn, wife of Clayton Christman, Miguel Perez, and his wife Maria, Jorge Perez, Rachel, wife of Nicholas Troychock; five great-grandchildren: Samantha, Hayden, Ivan, Andre,  and Victor; siblings: Ana Rodriquez, Juanita Morales, Teresa Merced,  Carmen Cordero, and Julia Perez; and many nieces and nephews.

While her presence on this earth will be missed, we are better for having had her influence in our lives and now blessed with her as our angel in heaven.

A private family memorial service will be held at a later date.  She will be interred in Prospect Cemetery, East Stroudsburg. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Father Manuel Rodriquez Delgado, C.Ss.R., c/o Mrs Nydia Vazquez, 649 Sunset Drive, Bloomsburg, PA 17815.
