MARY ELIZABETH "BETTY" RARIG
Mary Elizabeth "Betty" Rarig, age 89, formerly of West Eleventh St., Bloomsburg, died at 6:50 a. m. Sunday, May 15, 2011 at the Bloomsburg Health Care Center where she was a patient for one month. She was in failing health since Dec. 28, 2010 and previously resided at the Nazareth Center at Maria Joseph Manor, Danville for five years.
Born on Nov. 25, 1921 in Russell, Manitoba, Canada, she was a daughter of the late Rev. Dr. Ebenezer W. and Jane Douglas (Cummings) Johnson. She resided in Bloomsburg since July, 1970.
Betty was a 1939 graduate of Russell High School and received her BA degree from the University of Western Ontario, London, Ontario, Canada and her MA degree from Columbia University, New York City. She received her RN degree from Winnipeg General Hospital School of Nursing in 1945.
She was employed as a professor at Wilkes College, Wilkes-Barre for seven and one half years and last at Bloomsburg University where she taught for eight years, retiring in January, 1988. She taught "Community Health Nursing".
Betty was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Bloomsburg since 1970. She was active in the Presbyterian Womens group of the Church, holding various offices and also sang in the Church choir from 1970 until recently. She also was a member of the Bloomsburg Sacred Choral.
She served on the board of the Mental Health Association of the Central Susquehanna Valley for over 20 years and held a number of offices. She also was a member of APSCURF (retired faculty club) at Bloomsburg University and the Bloomsburg Ivy Club.
Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Emory W. Rarig, Jr. on Sept. 11, 1989; by a sister, Helen M. Rome in 1997; by two brothers: Alexander B. Johnson in 2001 and Rev. Dr. D. Bruce Johnson in 1998; and a nephew, Richard E. Martin.
Surviving are a brother, Gilbert Currie-Johnson, Abbottsford, British Columbia, Canada; and several nephews and nieces, including Cecile C. Stiner, Benton.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 11 a. m. in First Presbyterian Church, 345 Market St., Bloomsburg, with Rev. Liz Hallen officiating. Interment will be held at the convenience of the family in St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery, Numidia.
The family will provide flowers. Memorials may be sent to the First Presbyterian Church or to Columbia-Montour Home Health Services, 410 Glenn Ave., Bloomsburg.
