Ned Henry Markle, 82, 1909 Bloom Road, Danville, ended his journey through this life on Monday, December 7th, 2009 at 2:50 p.m., in the Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, where he had been a patient for about a day.
Ned was born at home on Grant Street in Berwick on August
15, 1927, a son of the late Clarence Sr. and Florence
(Bower) Markle.
He attended Nescopeck High School and later joined the United States
Navy near the end of World War II. He served in a Marine Sea Bee unit
and performed as part of the occupation forces stationed in Sasebo,
Nagasaki Prefecture, Japan.
After leaving the armed forces, he earned
the nickname "Leadfoot Ned" racing stock cars at various area tracks.
Ned moved to Rochester, NY and married the former Shirley Steffen on September 21, 1957, and their two sons were born there before they moved to Danville in 1966.
He worked at Berwick Forge and Fabricating, where he served as president of the local union for several years, including during an extended strike in the early 1970s.
He then took a job serving as a staff representative for the United
Steelworkers Union District Office, Milton, in 1977 from which he retired in 1987.
In his retirement he did vehicle transports for various local dealerships and
spent time with his friends at "The Garage" (formerly Columbia Motors).
He also enjoyed playing cards, golfing in the Monday Night Golf League
at Cherokee Golf Course and various area tournaments (including every
year of the Jimmy Spencer Charity Tournament), bowling in the Danville
Moose League, volunteering to work at various Moose events and spending
time with his family.
Ned was a life member of the Moose Lodge 1133, Danville, and the Legion of the Moose. He also was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 298, Danville; East End Fire Co., Danville; and West Berwick Hose Co. #1, Berwick.
In addition to his wife of 52 years, Ned is survived by two sons: Ned
Jeffery Markle and Gregory Jay Markle, both of Bloomsburg and a
brother, Frank Markle and his wife Nellie, Kirkwood, NY.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Clarence
Markle, Jr.
Funeral services will be held on Friday at 2 p.m. in the Roat-Kriner Funeral Home, 1715 Bloom Road, Danville, with William Conrad officiating. Interment in the Odd Fellows Cemetery, Danville, with military honors by the combined Montour County Veterans Group. Friends may call on Friday from 1-2 p.m. Moose memorial services at 1:15 p.m.
