Paula R. Lehr, age 79, of 161 Belles Road, Orangeville, died at her home at 10:20 a.m. Tuesday, July 22, 2014 after courageously battling cancer for the past year.

Born in Rome, New York on March 26, 1935, she was a daughter of the late Samuel H. and Ida (Leventhal) Rumack. She attended East Stroudsburg High School and later Rome High School, where she graduated in 1952. She went on to receive a bachelor’s degree in Home Economics, with a major in Food and Nutrition, from Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, New York in 1956.

Paula had resided in Fishingcreek Twp. since 1968, and also had a home on Oak Island, NC where she spent the winter months, since 1990. She previously lived in Red Bank, New Jersey.

Paula was last employed as a Social Worker for Danville State Hospital from 1981 until her retirement in 1989. Earlier she worked at the Columbia County Assistance Office, where she was hired in 1972 to launch the Home Aid Program funded by a state grant; and continued as the coordinator until 1977 when she became a Public Assistance Caseworker.

Upon her retirement, Paula began working with clay, and enjoyed exhibiting her ceramics at the Franklin Square Gallery in Southport, NC. She was active with the Fishing Creek Herb Guild, Bloomsburg. Of note was her involvement with the Herald Tribune Fresh Air Fund, where she was one of the inaugural sponsors in our area, circa 1970.

She was preceded in death by her husband: artist and legendary science fiction illustrator Paul C. Lehr on July 27, 1998; and by a sister, Leigh Bookbinder in 1998.

Surviving are four children: Jennifer J. Lehr, Orcas Island, Wash.; twins: Diana N. Lehr, Makawao, Hawaii and Seth A. Lehr, Topanga, Cal.; and Michael A. Lehr, Mountain View, Cal.; and by a sister, Susan Beth Rumack, Buffalo, New York.
