Phillip W. "Wellie" Knouse, age 92, of Danville, died peacefully in his sleep at the Grandview Nursing & Rehabilitation, Danville, early Saturday, August 20, 2016.
Born in Lime Ridge on September 16, 1923, he was a son of the late William H. and Charlotte E. (Neyhard) Knouse. He resided in Danville since 2002; Catawissa from 1995 to 2002; Strawberry Ridge from 1992 to 1995; and in Lansdale from 1962 to 1994.
Wellie was last employed by Agway, Corp. in Colmar where he worked for eight years, retiring in 1984 and earlier he was employed by Lansdale Transportation Co., Lansdale, as a truck driver for 23 years. Following his retirement he worked as a painter.
He attended Trinity United Church of Christ, Strawberry Ridge.
Wellie served with the US Army during World War II. He was a life member of the Catawissa VFW Post.
He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Phyllis DePhillippo in 1991 and by the love of his life and soul mate, Shirley Day in 2008, who was his companion for over 10 years; by two sisters: Evelyn I. Kinn and Zella Mae Meade; and by two brothers: Jack Knouse and Joseph W. Knouse.
Wellie is survived by three children: Joseph Knouse, Phoenix, Ariz.; Jacqueline Shepard, Phoenix, Ariz.; Patricia, wife of Marc Stern, Mesa, Ariz.; two grandchildren; three great-grandsons; and several nieces and nephews, including cousin Bonnie of Danville who was like a daughter to him. Special thanks to Bonnie for being there for "Uncle Wellie" and for being Patti's ears and eyes when she was unable to travel to Pennsylvania.
The family would like to extend their appreciation to the staff at Grandview for taking wonderful care of Wally for the past two years, and for treating him with great kindness, care, love and dignity. Appreciation is also extended to Doctors Cover and Hergan for their roles in his care.
Graveside services will be held on Thursday at 2 p. m. in Strawberry Ridge Cemetery with Pastor Shawn M. McNett of Trinity UCC officiating. There will be no viewing.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of the Dean W. Kriner, Inc., Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 325 Market Street, Bloomsburg.
