ROBERT B. STEVENS
Robert B. Stevens, age 86, 1798 Old Tioga Turnpike, Stillwater (New Columbus) died at 9:15 a. m. Friday, October 5, 2012 at his home after having health problems since December, 1994.
Born in New Columbus on June 29, 1926, he was a son of the late Carl A. and Grace A. (Burns) Stevens. He was a lifelong resident of the farm he was born on in New Columbus and a 1944 graduate of Benton High School. He assisted his father on the family farm, eventually owned it and it is now operated by his son Ed.
Bob was a member of the Town Hill United Methodist Church. He served on the Northwest Area School board for 38 years and was a member of Oriental Lodge 460, F & A. M., Orangeville for over 50 years. He also served as a director of the New Columbus Academy Memorial Hall Association for many years; was on the board of the Agricultural Stabilization Service (ASC) and also belonged to the Pennsylvania Farmers Association.
In his early life he was an avid baseball player for the former Bendertown team in the Twin County League, playing shortstop and his nick name was âgroundhogâ.
Bob was preceded in death by a brother, Carl A. Stevens, Jr. and a sister, Reba Shannon.
Surviving are his wife, the former Erith J. Wenner, with whom he would have celebrated his 65th wedding anniversary on November 8, 2012; a son, Robert E. âEdâ Stevens, and his wife Carolyn, Benton; two daughters: Deborah L., wife of Donald J. Stone, D.O., Bloomsburg and Sally L. Chapin, and her partner Mark Cressinger, Stillwater; eight grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 11 a. m. in the Dean W. Kriner, Inc., Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Benton, with Pastor Michael T. Bodeck of the Fairmount Springs-Bethel Hill United Methodist Churches officiating. Interment in St. James Cemetery, near Bendertown. Friends may call at the funeral home on Monday from 6-8 p. m.
