Roy M. Shaffer, age 76, 10 Morrison Road, Bloomsburg, died at 8:25 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 21, 2010, at the Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, where he was admitted late Sunday evening.
Born in Bloomsburg on Oct. 19, 1934, he was a son of the late Ray W. and Pearl (Hillard) Shaffer. He resided in the Bloomsburg area his entire life, attending the former Millertown Public School, before graduating from Bloomsburg High School in 1952. Roy served with the U.S. Army from July 1957 until July 1959.
Roy was a Gradall equipment operator, all of his working life. He was employed by the former Clair C. Hock, Inc.; Barletta Construction Co. and served as a roadmaster of Mount Pleasant Township for a number of years. At the time of his death he was still employed on the Township road crew.
He was a member of Christ Lutheran Church, Buckhorn and previously had been a member of St. Luke Lutheran Church, Lightstreet Road, Bloomsburg for 50 years. He was instrumental in developing and building the new St. Luke Church, where he was a former Church Council president and Sunday school superintendent. He was attending St. John's "Gordner's" Lutheran Church, Unityville at Roy was a member of Oriental Lodge 460, F & AM, Orangeville; Lightstreet Grange; member and past-president of the Lightstreet Community Fire Co.; and a life member of the Dizzy Dozen Hunting Club. He was a former assistant Scoutmaster of the Lightstreet Boy Scout Troop; a former leader of the Lightstreet 4-Club and had been recognized as a Pennsylvania Keystone Farmer. He enjoyed antiquing, gardening and especially time spent with his family.
Surviving are his wife, the former Mary Ann Gordner, with whom he celebrated his 57th wedding anniversary on on April 18, 2010; a son, Jon B. Shaffer and his partner Ron Punneo, Houston, Tex.; a daughter, Jewel A., wife of Tom E. Flick, Ellicott City, Md.; three grandchildren: Rachel, Zachary and Joshua Flick; and three sisters: Florine Silver, Huntington, West Va.; Mabel Kabbash, Poughkeepsie, N.Y.; and Nancy, wife of Donald Golder, Perry, Ga. There are also a number of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by seven brothers: Boyd, Wilbur, Guy, Paul, Noah, Raymond and Dale Shaffer; as well as by five sisters: Florence Hawk, Hazel Tilbury, Mary Fausey, Etta Shaffer; and Pauline Brown.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2010, at 11 a.m. in St. John's "Gordner's" Lutheran Church, 68 Gordner's Church Road, Unityville, with his pastor, Rev. Thomas E. Light, Jr., Rev. Ronald G. Montgomery, pastor of St. John's and Rev. Timothy M. Valiante, pastor of Emmanuel Baptist Church, Greenwood Township, officiating. Private interment will be at the convenience of the family.
Friends may call at the Church on Monday from 6-8 p.m. or Tuesday from 10-11 a.m. Masonic memorial services at 8 p.m. Monday.
