Ruth N. Billman, age 87, formerly of Fisherdale Road, Elysburg, died at 11:15 a. m. Wednesday, July 16, 2014 at the home of her daughter, Julie, in Bloomsburg. She was in failing health for the past year. She was a guest at Vintage Knolls, Danville, from September, 2013 until three weeks ago when she went to her daughters home.
Born on December 31, 1926 in Locust Township, she was a daughter of the late Marvin W. and Anna S. (Walter) Bittner. She resided in the Numidia area her entire life and was a 1944 graduate of the former Locust Township High School.
She was employed by Southern Area School District for more than 20 years, in the cafeteria. During the summer months, she worked at the Alamo Restaurant at Knoebel's Grove for many years. Earlier in life she was employed by the former Brown's Catering of Danville.
Ruth enjoyed gardening, growing flowers and vegetables and she received many blue ribbons with her entries at the annual Bloomsburg Fair. She enjoyed going to yard sales and auctions as well as reading and spending time with her large family.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Leroy "Buster" Billman on July 5, 2013; by two brothers: Marvin W. Bittner, Jr and Lee Bittner; and a sister, Elsie Letterman.
Surviving are seven children, four daughters: Sandra, wife of William Whispell, Fernville; Julie Davenport, and her companion, Tom Arnold, at whose home she died; Jeannie Leaver, Allentown; Pamela, wife of Anthony McDonald, Espy; three sons: David Billman, and his wife Cindy; Roger Billman, and his wife Jamie; Michael Billman, and his wife Mary Ann, all of Elysburg; 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; a brother, Ray Bittner, and his wife Elaine, Catawissa; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be held on Saturday, August 16, 2014 at 2 p. m. in the Dean W. Kriner, Inc., Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 325 Market St., Bloomsburg, with Columbia Montour Hospice Chaplain, R. Christian Dunlop officiating. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family.
