Ruth Ann Bower, age 83, 67 Upper Woodcrest Road, Berwick, died at her home at 5:30 p. m. Thursday, October 5, 2017 after having been in ill health since April.
Born near Stillwater on June 9, 1934, she was a daughter of the late Griffith and Vivian (Shultz) Sponenberg. She resided in Berwick for 73 years and attended Berwick High School.
Ruth Ann was last employed as the secretary -treasurer of two family owned businesses: Car-Mar, Inc. and General Tank, Inc. Earlier in her life she was employed by Wise Snack Foods.
She came from a simple country life, with ambition to become a world traveler, and she was certainly accomplished. From the ruins of Stonehenge to the shores of Monte Carlo, she lived a life for which most would be striving. However, she was most definitely grounded with her family. Not a single person could ask for a better mother or grandmother. Being of German and Welsh heritage, ergo, a strong and vibrant woman, she will always be remembered for her loving and steadfast ways.
Ruth Ann was a member of the St. Luke Lutheran Church, Bloomsburg; the Red Hat Society and the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. For many years she delivered "Meals on Wheels" in Berwick. She enjoyed flower gardening.
She married Carl G. Bower on June 9, 1950 and together they created a family and home next to none. Surviving in addition to her husband are three sons: David A. Bower, and his wife Marion, Gettysburg; Daniel L. Bower, and his wife Peggy, Conyngham; Richard C. Bower, Berwick; five grandchildren: William Edward Bower; Justin C. Bower; Lindsey L. Bower; Andrew R. Bower; Shelby L. Bower; and two brothers: Carl Sponenberg, Greenwood, South Carolina and Sam Sponenberg, and his wife Rosalie, Hillsborough, New Jersey.
Graveside services will be held on Tuesday at 10 a. m. in the Pine Grove Cemetery, Walnut Street, Berwick, with her pastor, Rev. John E. Fenton officiating. There will be no viewing,
The family asks that flowers be kindly omitted.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of the Dean W. Kriner, Inc., Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 325 Market Street, Bloomsburg.
